Romanian Deadlift (RDL) is a strengthening exercise where a loaded barbell is lifted off the ground from a stabilized, bent over position, knees free to bend. It is a variation on the traditional deadlift and is one of the three canonical powerlifting exercises, along with the squat and bench press. The RDL targets the glutes, hamstrings, and lower back, and it is an excellent exercise for developing hamstring strength. The hip-hinge motion in RDLs is “probably the most important pattern for overall movement health,” according to Hulslander. RDL workouts can boost mobility in your hips, hamstrings, and lower back, and they can be done with less weight than traditional deadlifts, which minimizes joint stress. RDLs are great for weightlifters of any experience level, and anybody whos doing any type of strength training program should add in Romanian deadlifts somewhere in the program.
