Reflexology, also known as zone therapy, is an alternative medical practice that involves the application of pressure to specific points on the feet, ears, and hands using thumb, finger, and hand massage techniques without the use of oil or lotion. Reflexology is based on a pseudoscientific system of zones and reflex areas that purportedly reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work on the feet and hands causes a physical change to the supposedly related areas of the body. Reflexology is defined as "gentle manipulation or pressing on certain parts of the foot to produce an effect elsewhere in the body".
Reflexologists believe that applying pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, and ears offers a range of health benefits. The theory is that this eases stress, helps the body work better, and keeps the body balanced and disease-free. Different body parts correspond with different organs and body systems, and pressure applied to specific reflex points on the foot is said to induce a healing response, even alleviating some ailments. Reflexology is complementary to medical treatments and can be done alongside traditional care, but it’s not an alternative to it, and reflexologists don’t diagnose or treat illnesses.
While reflexology may help you feel less stressed, more relaxed, and more energized, there is no convincing scientific evidence that reflexology is effective for any medical condition. Research on reflexology is currently of low quality, and there aren’t any well-designed studies showing that reflexology is better than foot massage.
