A relational database management system (RDBMS) is a type of database management system that stores data in a structured format using rows and columns. It is a collection of programs and capabilities that update, administer, and interact with a relational database. Most commercial RDBMSes use Structured Query Language (SQL) to manage the data in tables. The RDBMS provides an interface between users and applications and the database, as well as administrative functions for managing data storage, access, and performance. The relational database model allows any table to be related to another table using a common attribute. Some well-known RDBMSs include MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle Database. Cloud-based relational databases like Cloud SQL, Cloud Spanner, and AlloyDB have become increasingly popular as they offer managed services for patching, capacity management, provisioning, and infrastructure support.
