Restorative yoga is a style of yoga that focuses on relaxation, stress relief, and healing the body, mind, and spirit. It involves holding yoga poses, or asanas, for longer durations than in conventional yoga classes, often for twenty minutes or more, using props such as blankets, blocks, and bolsters to support the body and allow the muscles to relax. Restorative yoga is practiced at a slow pace, with a focus on stillness and deep breathing, and is appropriate for all levels. Unlike more active yoga styles, such as vinyasa or Bikram, restorative yoga activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps keep basic functions working as they should and promotes relaxation. A restorative yoga session may consist of only four to six asanas. Some common restorative yoga poses include Childs Pose, Legs Up the Wall, and gentle spinal twists.
