In the Bible, righteousness is a fundamental concept that encompasses behavior that is morally justifiable or right, in accordance with divine or moral law. It is an attribute that belongs to God and is manifested in His laws. The Bibles standard of human righteousness is Gods own perfection in every attribute, attitude, behavior, and word. It describes conduct in relation to others, especially with regards to the rights of others in business, legal matters, and relationship to God. Righteousness is based on Gods standard, as He is the ultimate Lawgiver. It is not legalistic, but a beautiful gift from God to humanity through Christs act of love. Righteousness is living in a manner that is in proper alignment with Gods perfect moral standards, and it is only possible through the cleansing of sin by Jesus Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
