The SAG-AFTRA strike is an ongoing strike action that began on July 14, 2023, due to an ongoing labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) . It marks the first time that actors have initiated a labor dispute in the U.S. since the 1980 actors strike and the first time that actors and writers have walked out simultaneously since 1960. The strike affects TV, theatrical, and streaming work covered by the TV/Theatrical Agreements. The strike is also coinciding with a Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike that began in May in a series of broader Hollywood labor disputes.

In addition to the ongoing strike, SAG-AFTRA’s National Board has voted unanimously to send a strike authorization vote to SAG-AFTRA members in preparation of the union’s forthcoming bargaining dates with signatory video game companies. The strike authorization permits the National Board to declare a strike if the video game companies fail to negotiate fairly with SAG-AFTRA. The Interactive Media Agreement, which is SAG-AFTRA’s video game contract, was extended beyond the original expiration date as they negotiated with the companies for critical terms SAG-AFTRA members need. Unfortunately, throughout the negotiations, the companies have failed to address those needs.
