The Special Boat Service (SBS) is the special forces unit of the United Kingdoms Royal Navy. It can trace its origins back to the Second World War when the Army Special Boat Section was formed in 1940. The SBS is Britains maritime special forces unit and is highly trained to operate in maritime, amphibious, and riverine environments. The SBS is under the Operational Command of Director Special Forces and is based in Hamworthy barracks, Poole, Dorset. The SBS Reserve (SBS(R)) provides individual reservists to augment the regular SBS. The SBS consists of four squadrons: C, X, M, and Z, each containing around 60 men. The SBS is the elite maritime counterterrorism unit of the Royal Navy and leads the United Kingdom’s marine counter-terrorism response.
