In soccer, a scrimmage is an unstructured practice game that is mostly done for practice or recreational purposes. It is a practice session where the coach tries to simulate match situations as much as possible to help players prepare for real-game situations. Scrimmages are often slotted at the end of practice sessions and enable players to put into practice what they have learned during the training sessions. They are a great way of including some game time into the training sessions which often include structured drills and exercises. Scrimmages can also be used to trial a new system or formation without doing it in an actual game where points matter. The main purpose of a scrimmage is to give players firsthand experience to try and understand how a proper game of soccer works.
