SEVIS stands for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, which is a web-based information system used by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to maintain information on nonimmigrant students, exchange visitors, and their dependents. SEVIS is managed by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), which is a program within U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. SEVIS tracks and monitors F, M, and J nonimmigrants and dependents throughout the duration of approved participation. SEVP manages SEVIS, which is a critical tool in SEVP’s mission to protect national security while supporting the legal entry and stay of the more than one million F, M and J nonimmigrants coming to the United States for educational and cultural exchange programs. SEVIS is used by SEVP-certified schools to fulfill their legal reporting responsibility regarding student addresses, courses of study, enrollment, employment, and compliance with the terms of F and M student status.
