Sinemet is a combination medication used to treat symptoms of Parkinsons disease or Parkinson-like symptoms such as shakiness, stiffness, and difficulty moving. Parkinsons disease is caused by too little of a naturally occurring substance called dopamine in the brain, and Sinemet helps to control movement by changing levodopa into dopamine in the brain. Carbidopa, another active ingredient in Sinemet, prevents the breakdown of levodopa in the bloodstream so more levodopa can enter the brain and can also reduce some of levodopas side effects such as nausea and vomiting. Sinemet is also used to treat Parkinson symptoms caused by carbon monoxide poisoning or manganese intoxication. However, Sinemet should not be used if you have narrow-angle glaucoma or if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days.
