A sled is a land vehicle that slides across a surface, usually of ice or snow. It can be built with either a smooth underside or a separate body supported by two or more smooth runners. There are various types of sleds that can be pulled by animals such as reindeer, horses, mules, oxen, or dogs. In American usage, sled remains the general term but often implies a smaller device, often for recreational use. Sledge implies a heavier sled used for moving freight or massive objects. Sleigh refers more specifically than in Britain to a vehicle which is essentially a cold-season alternative to a carriage or wagon and has seating for passengers.

In addition to its use as a vehicle, "SLED" can also refer to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, which is an accredited law enforcement agency. The primary mission of SLED is to provide quality manpower and technical assistance to law enforcement agencies and to conduct investigations on behalf of the state as directed by the Governor and Attorney General.

"SLED sales" is another term that refers to selling products or services to the State, Local, and Education sectors of the government that arent federal. This includes everything from police and fire to transportation and from parks and recreation to public works.
