The solidarity tax credit is a refundable tax credit for low- and middle-income families in Quebec. It is one of the tax measures intended for families and is calculated based on your family income, which includes your income and that of your spouse (if applicable). The credit is made up of three components: the QST component, the housing component, and the component for individuals living in northern villages. To be eligible for the credit, you must be at least 18 years old, have legal status in Canada, and live in an eligible dwelling. If you are less than 18 years of age, you might still be eligible to claim the solidarity tax credit as long as you have a spouse or someone received child assistance payments from the Régie des rentes du Québec as payments on your behalf. The amount of the credit you are eligible for is determined based on your situation as of December 31 of the tax year. The credit is paid in addition to personal or corporate tax and is generally calculated based on a percentage of the tax bill. All three components are taken into account when your tax credit is calculated, but the total tax credit amount might be reduced based on your family income.
