Space in art refers to the visual area or environment created by a work of art. It is one of the most vital elements that artists use to create impactful works. Space can be used to create a sense of depth, or to guide the viewers eye through the composition. In terms of art, space is the area around, above, and within an object. With consideration to drawings and paintings, the goal is to create the illusion of space. Many new artists overlook the importance of creating space in a drawing or painting, which can result in a flat-looking artwork or objects appearing to be floating.
