Space in art refers to the visual area or environment created by a work of art. It is one of the most vital elements that artists use to create impactful works. Space can be used to create a sense of depth, or to guide the viewers eye through the composition. In terms of art, space is the area around, above, and within an object. With consideration to drawings and paintings, the goal is to create the illusion of space. Many new artists overlook the importance of creating space in a drawing or painting, which can result in a flat-looking artwork or objects appearing to be floating. There are six ways an artist can create the illusion of space on a 2-Dimensional surface, including overlapping, placement on the paper, size, detail, color, and value.
Space in art can refer to the space within an object, between objects, or the space around objects. Regardless of style, space art generally attempts to communicate ideas somehow related to space, often including an artistic interpretation of varied cosmological phenomena and scientific discoveries. Space art encompasses realism, impressionism, hardware art, sculpture, abstract imagery, and zoological art. Although artists have long produced art with astronomical elements, the genre of space art itself is still in its infancy, having begun only when technological advancement allowed for more detailed observation of the night sky.
