A speaker is an output hardware device that connects to a computer to generate sound. It is one of the most common output devices used with computer systems. The signal used to produce the sound that comes from a computer speaker is created by the computers sound card. Most computer speakers are active speakers, meaning they have an internal amplifier which allows you to increase the volume, or amplitude, of the sound. Speakers usually come in pairs, which allows them to produce stereo sound from two separate audio channels. The primary objective of speakers is to offer audio output for the listener. The electromagnetic waves are converted into sound waves through the speaker as they are transducers. Computer speakers range widely in quality and in price. Some computer speakers have equalization features such as bass and treble controls. More sophisticated computer speakers can have a subwoofer unit to enhance bass output. The larger subwoofer enclosure usually contains the amplifiers for the subwoofer and the left and right speakers.
