Special Education, commonly abbreviated as SPED, refers to a range of services that help kids with disabilities learn. It is a set of services governed by federal law and provided to students who experience exceptional learning needs. Special education is tailored to meet the unique needs of a student eligible to receive special education services. It is not a “one size fits all” approach. Special education is instruction that is specially designed to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability. It is education that is individually tailored to the specific needs of a student. The special education a child receives must be “based on peer-reviewed research to the extent practicable” .
