Spyware is a type of malicious software, or malware, that is installed on a computing device without the users knowledge or consent. It is designed to gather information about a person or organization and send it to another entity in a way that harms the user by violating their privacy, endangering their devices security, or other means. Spyware can collect almost any type of data, including personal information like internet surfing habits, user logins, and bank or credit account information. Some of the most common examples of spyware include adware, infostealers, keyloggers, rootkits, system monitors, tracking cookies, and Trojans. Spyware can be distributed by getting potential victims to click on a link in an email, pop-up window, or ad. Once installed, it can monitor internet activity, track login credentials, and spy on sensitive information. Spyware can also interfere with a users device and network performance, slowing down daily user activities.
