A storage device is any type of computing hardware that is used for storing, porting, or extracting data files and objects. It is an integral part of the computer hardware which stores information/data to process the result of any computational work. Without a storage device, a computer would not be able to run or even boot up. Storage devices can hold and store information both temporarily and permanently. They may be internal or external to a computer, server, or computing device. Some examples of storage devices include:
-
Hard Disk Drive (HDD): A hard disk drive is a non-volatile storage device that stores digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating platters with magnetic surfaces.
-
Solid State Drive (SSD): A solid-state drive is a non-volatile storage device that stores data on flash memory chips.
-
USB Flash Drive: A USB flash drive is a portable storage device that uses flash memory to store data.
-
CD/DVD: A CD or DVD is an optical storage device that uses laser technology to read and write data.
-
Memory Card: A memory card is a small storage device that is commonly used in digital cameras, smartphones, and other portable devices.
Storage devices are one of the core components of any computing device. They store virtually all of the data and applications on a computer, except for hardware firmware which is generally managed through separate read-only memory or ROM.
