Super Tuesday is the United States presidential primary election day in February or March when the greatest number of U.S. states hold primary elections and caucuses. It is an unofficial term used by journalists and political pundits to refer to presidential primary elections since at least 1976. Super Tuesday is considered the most important day on the Democratic primary calendar because there are so many delegates up for grabs. More than a third of all delegates for the Democratic National Convention were up for grabs on this one day. Super Tuesdays voting is especially important when the primary still lacks clarity. The phrase "Super Tuesday" was born out of a desire by Democrats in the 1980s to nominate a more moderate candidate. The date of Super Tuesday varies from year to year, but it is usually held in early March.
