A synapse is a structure in the nervous system that allows for the transmission of signals between neurons. It is defined as the point of contact between the terminal branches of the axon of one neuron with the dendrite of another neuron. There are two types of synapses: electrical and chemical. In a chemical synapse, the electrical activity in the presynaptic neuron triggers the release of chemical messengers, called neurotransmitters, which bind to receptors on the postsynaptic cell and make it more or less likely to fire an action potential. In contrast, in an electrical synapse, ions flow directly between cells. The transmission of impulses at synapses is facilitated by neurotransmitters, which transmit information across the synaptic cleft. A synapse can only function effectively if there is some way to "turn off" the signal once its been sent, which lets the postsynaptic cell return to its normal resting potential, ready for new signals to arrive.
