Synthetic nicotine is a form of nicotine that is created in a laboratory rather than derived from tobacco leaves. It is produced as a liquid, which is how it has primarily found its way into vape products. Synthetic nicotine has been around for some time, but it has only recently started being used in products such as e-cigarettes as the production costs have gone down. Synthetic nicotine products are marketed as "tobacco-free" because they don’t contain any tobacco leaf, but they are not necessarily synthetic because they use nicotine derived from tobacco. Synthetic nicotine is still nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance that research suggests is as addictive as heroin, cocaine, or alcohol. Nicotine is especially harmful to adolescents, as it impacts brain development. Scientists are beginning to study the health effects of synthetic nicotine, and it is already known that flavor ingredients can cause negative health effects. Historically, synthetically created nicotine tended to produce nicotine that was not as bioavailable as tobacco-derived nicotine.
