Teflon coating is a chemical coating known as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) . It is a type of plastic sprayed on various items and then baked to create a nonstick, waterproof, noncorrosive, and nonreactive surface. Teflon coating is used in various industries as a coating agent, including the manufacturing of industrial, pharmaceutical, and automotive products. It is also commonly used in household products, such as nonstick pans, which are approved by the US FDA as safe food processing equipment. Teflon coating is waterproof, non-sticky, and heat-resistant, forming a protective coating over the original surface. Teflon coating is made up of carbon and fluorine atoms and provides a nonreactive, nonstick, and almost frictionless surface. Although some manufacturers use perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) to make PTFE, Chemours, the manufacturer of Teflon, has never used PFOA in the manufacture of Teflon nonstick coatings.
