The biggest dinosaur ever discovered is the Patagotitan mayorum, which lived around 101 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous. It is estimated to have weighed about 70 tons in life, which is as much as 10 African elephants. The collection of fossilized bones attributed to the species included a femur (thighbone) that measured 2.4 meters (8 feet) from end to end. The titanosaur subgroup called the Titanosauria contained the largest sauropods, and Patagotitan mayorum may have been the world’s largest terrestrial animal of all time. Other contenders for the title of largest dinosaur include Argentinosaurus, which is estimated to have been 37 to 40 meters long, and Supersaurus, which may have been closer to 140 feet in length.
