The capital of Honduras is Tegucigalpa. It is the largest city in Honduras and serves as the countrys political and administrative center. Tegucigalpa is located on hilly terrain hemmed in by mountains, at an elevation of 3,200 feet (975 meters) above sea level. It was established as a gold and silver mining center in 1578 on the slopes of Mount Picacho. Tegucigalpa alternated with Comayagua as the capital from 1824 to 1880, when Tegucigalpa was made the permanent capital of the republic.
