The true color of the sun is white. The sun emits light across all colors of the visible spectrum almost equally, which combines to appear white to the human eye. The sun appears yellow to us on Earth because of the scattering of shorter wavelengths (blue and violet) by the Earth's atmosphere, a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering. When sunlight passes through the atmosphere, blue light is scattered in many directions, leaving the longer wavelengths like yellow and red to be seen, which makes the sun look yellowish from the surface of the Earth. At sunrise and sunset, the sun can appear orange or red because sunlight travels through a larger thickness of atmosphere, scattering even more blue light. But viewed from space, without atmospheric interference, the sun appears white. This white color is consistent with the sun's surface temperature of about 5,800 degrees Celsius (10,000 degrees Fahrenheit), which emits white light.
