There is currently no cure for HIV. However, antiretroviral therapy (ART) can help control the virus and reduce the amount of HIV in the body. ART involves taking a combination of medicines every day, which can help people with HIV live longer, healthier lives and reduce the risk of spreading the virus to others. It is recommended that all people with HIV take ART, no matter how long theyve had HIV or how healthy they are. HIV treatment does not prevent transmission of other sexually transmitted diseases. Skipping HIV treatment, even occasionally, can weaken the immune system and increase the risk of getting sick. Getting and keeping an undetectable viral load (or staying virally suppressed) is the best way to stay healthy and protect others. While there have been a few cases of people being cured of HIV, these cases are rare and there is still a lot of work to be done in finding a widespread cure for the virus that causes AIDS.
