The Dally M Award is the most prestigious individual honor in the National Rugby League (NRL) . It is awarded annually to the player voted as the best and fairest throughout the NRL regular season. The award recognizes exceptional skill, sportsmanship, and leadership in the game of rugby league. The Dally M Medal was named after Australian former rugby league great Herbert Henry "Dally" Messenger, who was instrumental in the establishment of rugby league football in Australia. The award was originally established in 1979 by The Daily Mirror newspaper and has been awarded every year since then, except for 1997 and 2003. The Dally M Medal is determined by a 3-2-1 voting system from two independent judges each game, who are tasked with assessing the contribution of players. The player who has won the most Dally M Medals is Johnathan Thurston, who won the award four times. In addition to the Player of the Year award, the Dally M Awards also honor positional award winners and the Dally M Team of the Year.
