The Noble Eightfold Path is a set of practices in Buddhism that leads to the end of suffering and the attainment of enlightenment. It consists of eight elements: right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. These eight elements are grouped into three essential elements of Buddhist mental discipline and wisdom: ethical conduct, mental discipline, and wisdom. The path is not meant to be followed in a linear fashion, but rather developed simultaneously as far as possible according to the capacity of each individual. The path is circular and can be applied to moments of sitting meditation as well as to one's whole life in the outer world. The ultimate goal of the path is to achieve complete freedom, happiness, and peace through moral, spiritual, and intellectual perfection.
