Traditionally within the Judeo-Christian tradition, the first day of the week has always been Sunday. This is because God created the earth in six days and set apart the seventh day for rest, the Sabbath (Genesis 2:1-3; Exodus 20:11). Most Christians today celebrate Sunday as the day of rest to remember that Christ rose on Sunday, although a minority holds to the belief that Saturday is still the correct day to keep the Sabbath. All four gospel accounts reveal how Jesus rose (and His tomb was found empty) “on the first day of the week” (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2,9; Luke 24:1; John 20:1) . The New Testament gives special significance to the first day of the week because Jesus arose on that day. The first day of the week is also mentioned in the Bible in other contexts, such as when the apostle Paul instructed the Corinthians to set aside money for the collection of the saints on the first day of every week (1 Corinthians 16:2) .
