The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system and is located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Its primary function is to produce a fluid that, together with sperm cells from the testicles and fluids from other glands, makes up semen. The prostate gland secretes a slightly alkaline fluid that forms part of the seminal fluid, which carries sperm. During ejaculation, the muscular glands of the prostate help to propel the prostate fluid and sperm into the urethra, and the semen then leaves the body out of the tip of the penis. The muscles of the prostate also ensure that the semen is forcefully pressed into the urethra and then expelled outwards during ejaculation. The prostatic secretion is important for the proper functioning of the sperm cells and therefore also for fertility in men.
