The vagina is an elastic muscular tube that connects the cervix, which is the opening of the uterus, to the outside of the body. It is an essential part of the female reproductive system and plays a vital role in menstruation, sexual intercourse, pregnancy, and childbirth. The vagina has three main functions: providing a passageway for blood and mucosal tissue from the uterus during a woman’s monthly period, receiving the penis during sexual intercourse and holding the sperm until they pass into the uterus, and providing a passageway for childbirth.
