According to multiple sources, the heaviest dinosaur was Argentinosaurus, estimated to have weighed between 60 and 124 tonnes. Most paleontologists favor the lower end of this range, between 60 and 90 tonnes. Argentinosaurus was a herbivore and part of a subgroup called the titanosaurs. It lived in what is now South America roughly 97-93.5 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. Although estimates of its length vary, figures range from 30 to 40 meters. By the most conservative estimates, however, Argentinosaurus dwarfs any living land animal, weighing around 10 times more than an adult African elephant.
