DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid, which is the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms. It is the molecule that carries genetic information for the development and functioning of an organism. DNA is made up of two strands that twist around each other to form a double helix. The information in DNA is stored as a code made up of four chemical bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T) . These bases pair up with each other, A with T and C with G, to form the rungs of the ladder-like structure of DNA. The sequence of these bases along DNAs backbone encodes biological information, such as the instructions for making a protein or RNA molecule. DNA is stored in the chromosomes that are inside every cell of the body. Everyone inherits two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent.
