The most venomous snake in the world is a matter of some debate, but the inland taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus) is often considered the most venomous based on its median lethal dose, or LD50, which defines the amount of a toxic agent that is sufficient to kill 50 percent of a population of animals. The saw-scaled viper (Echis carinatus) is also considered one of the deadliest snakes in the world, responsible for more human deaths than all other snake species combined. The black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) and the banded krait (Bungarus fasciatus) are also highly venomous and dangerous. The ranking of the most venomous snakes can vary based on different criteria such as venom toxicity, venom yield, and human encounter rates
