The father of Rana Pratap was Maharana Udai Singh II. He was the ruler of Mewar and the founder of the city of Udaipur. Maharana Pratap was born to Udai Singh II and his mother was Rani Jeevant Kanwar (also called Jaiwanta Bai) on May 9, 1540, at Kumbhalgarh in Rajasthan. Maharana Udai Singh II ruled the kingdom of Mewar with its capital at Chittor and later moved to Gogunda due to Mughal invasions. Maharana Pratap succeeded his father in 1572 as the ruler of Mewar.
