The newest COVID booster is a monovalent vaccine designed to protect against the XBB.1.5 subvariant of the Omicron variant. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the updated boosters from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna in September 2023, and Novavaxs updated booster is still being reviewed by the FDA. The updated vaccines are available to everyone aged 6 months and older, and the CDC recommends that people get them to protect against severe illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19. People who have been vaccinated should wait at least two months after their last COVID shot before getting the new booster.
