The oath of office for the President of the United States is specified in Article II, Section I, Clause 8 of the U.S. Constitution. The President-elect recites the following oath, which is administered by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, before he enters on the execution of his office:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
The Vice President-elect is sworn in first and repeats the same oath of office as senators, representatives, and other federal employees. The oath for other officials, including members of Congress, is specified in Article VI of the Constitution, which states that they "shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation to support this constitution".
