The divorce rate in the United States has declined over time. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the divorce rate in the United States was 3.2 per 1,000 population in 2019, down from 3.6 per 1,000 population in 2018. The crude divorce rate was 4.00 per population in 2000, and by 2021, it had fallen to 2.5 per 1,000 population, with just 689,308 people divorcing that year. The divorce rate for second marriages is even higher, with approximately 60-67% of second marriages ending in divorce. According to the American Psychological Association, approximately 40-50% of first marriages end in divorce. However, many experts feel that the divorce rate per 1000 married women is a much more accurate measure of the true divorce rate than the crude rate. Currently, the divorce rate per 1000 married women is 16.9, which is nearly double that of 1960 but down from the all-time high of 22.6 in the early 1980s.
