The phenomenon involved in a lawn grass becoming wet in the morning during winter is called dew. Dew is the moisture that forms at night when objects or the ground outside cool down by radiating, or emitting, their heat. During the day, water evaporates from the warm ground into the air, turning from a liquid into a gas called "water vapor." When evening comes, the warm ground continues to radiate heat into the air. As the ground begins to cool, the air will not be able to hold all the moisture. At a certain point, a temperature called the "dew point," water vapor in the air will begin to condense faster than water is evaporating. When this happens, dew forms on surfaces that arent warmed by the heat radiated from the ground. In early winter mornings, we can see drops of water on the grass because of condensation. Due to the cold climate, the water vapor present in the atmosphere condenses to form dew drops.
