Starlink is a satellite network developed by SpaceX to provide low-cost internet to remote locations. The purpose of Starlink satellites is to provide internet connectivity to underserved areas of the planet, as well as competitively priced service in more urbanized areas. Starlink operates on a satellite internet service technology that has existed for decades. Instead of using cable technology, such as fiber optics to transmit internet data, a satellite system uses radio signals through the vacuum of space. Ground stations broadcast signals to satellites in orbits, which in turn relay the data back to the Starlink users on Earth. Starlink satellites orbit approximately 342 miles (550 kilometers) above Earth and communicate with designated ground transceivers. The satellites are equipped with krypton or argon-fueled Hall thrusters which allow them to de-orbit at the end of their life. Starlink is primarily aimed toward users in more remote areas, and the company has begun providing its service to cruise lines and airlines over.
