Rhnull blood type is the rarest in humans. Known as "golden blood," it lacks all 61 Rh antigens on red blood cells, occurring in fewer than 50 known cases worldwide.
Key Characteristics
Rhnull results from rare genetic mutations inherited recessively, first identified in 1961. People with this type face transfusion challenges, receiving only Rhnull blood but able to donate to certain rare types.
Prevalence Comparison
Among common ABO-Rh types, AB-negative is rarest at under 1% of populations like the US. Rhnull's frequency is about 1 in 6 million, far exceeding that rarity.
