what is the sift minecraft

The Sift is an add-on that drops a whole new biome into your world, built around its own look and its own creature. Instead of just reskinning existing blocks, it gives you a proper themed area to explore, kind of like stumbling into a corner of the map that feels like it belongs to a different game entirely.

Once you're in there, you'll run into custom blocks like Sift Soil and Sift Stone, plus Siftwood for logs and leaves. There's also some purely decorative stuff scattered around, Shimmer Reed and Sift Bloom, which people mostly use to dress up ponds and paths once they've relocated some of the biome's materials to their own builds.

The real hook of the add-on is the Siftling. It's a small, frog-like creature that can live on land or in water, and it spawns naturally in groups when it finds the right surface, things like Sift Soil, grass, or dirt. If you want one without hunting, there's a spawn egg for it, or you can just summon it directly with a command.

Getting them to follow you or breed is simple: hold a slime ball near one to get its attention, and feed slime balls to two of them if you want them to breed. Killing a Siftling drops Sift Shards, which double as a craftable item at a normal crafting table, so you've got two ways to stock up on them.

Worth knowing this is different from the "sifting" mechanic you'll see in mods like Create or MineColonies, where sifting is a gameplay system for turning sand, gravel, or dirt into resources. The Sift here is purely about the biome, the blocks, and the creature that lives in it.
