"Coraline" is a dark fantasy horror film based on Neil Gaimans novella of the same name. The story follows Coraline Jones, a young girl who moves into a new home with her parents and discovers an idealized alternate universe behind a secret door in her new home. The meaning behind the story can be interpreted in a number of ways, but one of the most prevalent readings is that the story is about abuse and generational trauma. Coraline's relationship with her mother and the Beldam is a key aspect of this interpretation. Her mother is cold and dismissive towards her, refusing to give her the time and attention she needs, while the Beldam provides Coraline with a way to work through and process the neglect she has fallen victim to. The story is also inspired by a folktale called "The Ghost Wife," which tells the story of a young girl who becomes trapped in a hidden world after marrying a ghost.
