Karthigai Deepam is a traditional festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu and other nearby states. It is a festival of lights that is observed on the full moon day of the Karthigai month, which coincides with the Karthigai star. The festival has a great significance as it is believed to be the day when Lord Muruga was born from six sparks of fire that emanated from Shiva's third eye. These six sparks turned into six babies who were looked after by six Krittika stars. The festival is celebrated with the lighting of oil lamps, and it is believed that the flame of the lamp does not sputter on this day and takes the form of Lord Muruga and reaches up to the sky. The festival is also associated with the bonding between brothers and the triumph of good over evil. It is a 10-day festival, and special celebrations take place at the Arunachaleswarar temple in the Annamalai hills in Thiruvannamalai, where the Bharani Deepam is lit in the early morning hours of the 10th day
