The temperature of the moon at night can drop to as low as -208 degrees F (-130° C, 140 K) at the equator. In certain spots near the moons poles, temperatures can drop even further, reaching -424° F (-253°C or 20 K) . The wide variation in temperature is due to the fact that the moon has no atmosphere to hold in heat at night or prevent the surface from getting so hot during the day. However, researchers have found that parts of the moon have stable temperatures fit for humans, such as pits and caves where temperatures stay at roughly 63 degrees Fahrenheit (17 degrees Celsius) .
