The Truman Show is about Truman Burbank, an ordinary man who unknowingly lives his entire life on a massive television soundstage as the star of a reality TV show broadcast 24/7 worldwide. His entire environment, including his hometown of Seahaven Island and all the people around him, are actors and fabricated sets controlled by a television producer named Christof. Truman is kept from discovering the truth through staged events and psychological manipulation, such as instilling a fear of water by faking his father's death. Over time, Truman begins to notice odd occurrences that lead him to question his reality. Eventually, he escapes through a hidden exit, stepping into the real world, while viewers around the globe celebrate his liberation.
