According to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), enrolment and voting is compulsory for every Australian citizen aged 18 years or older. As of the latest statistics published on September 21, 2023, the AECs goal is to ensure at least 95% of eligible Australians are on the electoral roll at all times. In the 2019 federal election, 16.4 million people were enrolled to vote, and 92% of them voted. In a referendum on Indigenous Voice held in September 2023, 97.7% of eligible Australians had signed up to vote, which was the largest proportion of any electoral event in the 122 years that the Australian government has existed. However, the voter turnout in the 2022 federal election fell below 90%, which was the lowest turnout since the introduction of compulsory voting.
