Thrust force is a mechanical force that moves an object through a fluid, such as air or water. It is generated by the propulsion system of the object, such as the engines of an airplane or rocket. According to Newtons third law, when a system expels or accelerates mass in one direction, the accelerated mass will cause a force of equal magnitude but opposite direction to be applied to that system. The thrust force is measured in newtons (N) using the International System of Units (SI), and represents the amount needed to accelerate 1 kilogram of mass at the rate of 1 meter per second per second. The magnitude of the thrust depends on the amount of fluid that is accelerated and on the difference in velocity of the fluid through the engine. The physics involved in the generation of thrust is introduced in middle school and studied in some detail in high school and college.
