Tranq, also known as Xylazine, is a powerful sedative that is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for veterinary use. It is a non-opioid sedative analgesic medication that is largely mixed into and used as an additive with other opioid substances like heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine. Xylazine is a central nervous system depressant that can cause drowsiness, amnesia, and slow breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. It is not approved for human use, but it has been linked to an increasing number of overdose deaths nationwide in the evolving drug addiction and overdose crisis. Tranq is now found in up to 15% of fentanyl tests, and it is appearing mostly in the illegal fentanyl supply but also in cocaine. Xylazine is causing so many overdoses that the DEA has officially designated it as an emerging threat. It can cause horrific wounds on the skin that it’s being dubbed a “zombie drug” .
