Transitional housing is a temporary type of accommodation that is meant to bridge the gap from homelessness to permanent housing by offering structure, supervision, and support. It is designed for certain segments of the homeless population, including working homeless people who are earning too little money to afford long-term housing. The transitional time can be short, for example, one or two years, and in that time the person must file for and get permanent housing and usually some gainful employment or income, even if Social Security or assistance. Transitional housing is more long-term, service-intensive, and private than emergency shelters, yet remains time-limited to stays of three months to three years. Transitional housing programs provide temporary housing with supportive services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness with the goal of interim stability and support to successfully move to and maintain permanent housing. Transitional housing programs can cover housing costs and accompanying supportive services for program participants for up to 24 months. Transitional housing programs are also available for current and former foster youth.
