Translational research is an approach to research that aims to produce more meaningful and applicable results that directly benefit human health. It involves translating the results of basic research into results that can be used to solve particular problems and improve human health. Translational research is often classified by which stage of translation it falls into, from beginning research to societal application and impact. The T Spectrum illustrates the different stages of translational research. The goal of translational research is to translate basic science discoveries more quickly and efficiently into practice. Translational research encourages and promotes multidisciplinary collaboration among laboratory and clinical researchers, incorporates the desires of the general public, and identifies and supports the adoption of best medical and health practices. In the context of biomedicine, translational research is also known as bench to bedside. Although translational research is relatively new, there are now several major research centers focused on it, such as the National Institutes of Healths Clinical and Translational Science Awards.
